Formerly called Typar® GroundsKeeper®, Typar Professional Landscape Fabric is excellent for landscaped beds. A spunbonded polypropylene, its continuous fibers mean it won't easily unravel or fray. Unlike black plastic, it is porous to allow air, water and nutrients through to the roots of the plants, which allows for all-important healthy soil conditions. It actually retains moisture under it so plants have access to more water, but water will not pool on top of it and become "sour" as sometimes happens with black plastic.

Typar Professional Landscape Fabric is not, however, porous enough that weed roots can grow through it, so it prevents weed growth from disturbing the beauty of your landscaping. Although preventing weed growth is important for aesthetic reasons and because weeds compete with desirable plants for space, air, water and nutrients, Typar Professional Landscape Fabric adds another dimension. Because of its great strength, it's perfect for those projects where heavy or sharp materials need to be stabilized and prevented from sinking into the soil.

Typar Professional Landscape Fabric provides stability and helps prevent the pavers or bricks in patios and sidewalks from shifting, and it adds reinforcement while preventing vegetation from clogging the drain in drainage ditches. With retaining walls, Typar Professional Landscape Fabric allows water to come through while holding the soil behind the wall in place. Typar Professional Landscape Fabric also provides excellent soil retention when used in planters or pots, and it controls weed growth under wood decks.

Available in 3 feet by 50 feet and 3 feet by 100 feet sizes, Typar Professional Landscape Fabric is simple to install, and its light weight makes it easy to carry to the job site. In landscaped beds, clear the ground of clumps of grass, stones and any other objects that might cause a lump under the fabric, and spread Typar Professional Landscape Fabric over the area. For existing plants, cut an "x" in the fabric and pull the plant through; for new plants, cut an "x" in the fabric and plant through it. Cover Typar Professional Landscape Fabric with 3 to 4 inches of organic mulch such as hardwood chips or inorganic mulch such as gravel. Occasionally, a weed will grow in the mulch above Typar Professional Landscape Fabric, but it is easy to pull because its roots cannot penetrate the fabric.
