Typar Professional Landscape Fabric is a spunbonded polypropylene, with continuous filaments permanently bonded together for strength and durability. These fibers are closely matted together to help prevent roots from growing through them. (In fact, to allow desirable plants to grow, you must cut an “x” in the fabric for them.) However, Typar Professional Landscape Fabric is porous to allow the passage of water, air and nutrients, which are all necessary for healthy plants. Unlike black plastic, which is often used to inhibit weed growth, water will not pool on Typar Professional Landscape Fabric.

Inhibiting weed growth seems to be a never-ending problem, and one of the most common uses for Typar Professional Landscape Fabric is in landscaped areas. That’s because if you pull weeds by hand, the roots often remain to sprout again. And if you use pesticides, you run the risk of the spray drifting onto other plants and you have the worry of damaging the environment. Typar Professional Landscape Fabric is the simple, effective way to inhibit weeds.
There are also many other uses for Typar Professional Landscape Fabric because of its durability, strength and weight (3 ounces per square yard). It is excellent under brick or block walkways and patios because it stabilizes the pavers to help prevent shifting or tipping while allowing water migration to continue as usual. It is useful as part of an interceptor trench drain and around blind drains because its continuous fibers inhibit root growth from penetrating, although they allow water to pass through; the drain is protected but water will not pool on the fabric.

Typar Professional Landscape Fabric can be used to inhibit weed growth under decks, which is an area that is usually hard to reach when you’re mowing. Typar is excellent for soil retention behind retaining walls because of its strength and long life; it helps prevent soil from passing through, but again, water is not impeded.

Typar Professional Landscape Fabric is lightweight and easy to take to the job site, and its flexible structure makes it a cinch to install because it follows ground contours readily. After removing anything, such as rocks or clumps of vegetation, that would create a bulge, simply unroll the fabric over the area to be landscaped. Cut an “x” over existing plants, roll back the folds and gently bring the plants through the fabric so it settles at the base of their stems. (If the area is being newly landscaped, cut an “x” in the fabric where bushes or flowers are to be located before planting them.) Once plants are brought through, cover the fabric with 3 or 4 inches of organic mulch (such as wood chips) or inorganic mulch (such as stone) to protect the fabric from breaking down under the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
