Reemay® Lawn and Garden Blanket is the new name for a product that has been popular with gardeners for years. Formerly called The Germinator®, Reemay Lawn and Garden Blankets provide a number of benefits, including early germination, speeded plant growth, frost protection in both the early spring and late fall, and reduced insect infestation. Reemay Lawn and Garden Blankets are effective on vegetables, flowers and lawns. "We felt the name 'The Germinator' caused people to think the only thing this fabric did was to speed germination," says Jane Wright, Fiberweb® business unit manager for lawn and garden fabrics. "Plants protected by it definitely will germinate faster, but this fabric has so many benefits that we decided to change the name to more accurately reflect what it does." Reemay Lawn and Garden Blankets are made of Reemay® spunbonded polyester, which has been used on agricultural cash crops for more than 30 years; both field experience and university tests have shown its effectiveness. The lightweight fabric "floats" over plants so they can continue to grow while covered. Sunlight, water, air and nutrients easily pass through the blankets to reach the plants below. Reemay Lawn and Garden Blankets retain warmth to create an environment that lets vegetables, flowers and turfgrass thrive. Tests show that temperatures under the blankets are 3 to 7°F warmer than surrounding uncovered areas, so plant growth is promoted. This additional warmth protects plants during cold weather; plants can be set earlier and grown later with Reemay Lawn and Garden Blankets. Reemay Lawn and Garden Blankets also retain moisture by slowing evaporation rates, and the increased warmth and humidity create an environment similar to that found in a greenhouse, which has optimum growing conditions. Seeds under Reemay Lawn and Garden Blankets will germinate sooner, and plants will grow faster and larger. Gardeners detest the insects that fly in to lay their eggs near plants because when those eggs hatch, young insects voraciously consume tender young seedlings. Reemay Lawn and Garden Blankets are an effective physical barrier to these pests, and they also deter small mammals, such as rabbits and birds, from snacking on your flowers, vegetables or turfgrass. Of course, it is always a good idea to check under the blankets periodically to make sure the area was not already infested before the Reemay was placed. Available in a convenient 12 foot by 15 foot size, Reemay Lawn and Garden Blankets are easy to use. Simply drape them loosely over vegetables, flowers or turfgrass, leaving plenty of room for the plants to grow. Fold the edges under and secure them with stones, dirt or Typar Fabric Pegs, which are included in the package (ten pegs per package). Water plants by spraying directly onto the cover. Remove the Reemay Lawn and Garden Blankets if you need insects to pollinate your plants and when the temperature reaches 75° because the temperature under the blankets will be higher. When mowing grass after removing the blanket, mow only one-third of the new growth at a time to avoid turfgrass shock. When you no longer need your Reemay Lawn and Garden Blanket, fold it and store it out of direct sunlight. Properly stored and cared for, Reemay Lawn and Garden Blankets can last several seasons.
